The Erasmus+ funded “Future Minds: Designing Inclusive and Sustainable Futures for Tourism and Transport” project aims to co-develop innovative curricula for six MOOCs on tourism and transport and to organise three international training schools and multiple multiplier events across the EU. The project integrates sustainable, resilient, digital, climate-neutral, and inclusive practices into education for the tourism and transport sectors, responding to urgent and evolving societal and industry challenges.
Future Minds addresses the need for updated and practice-oriented learning in sectors that are undergoing rapid transformation due to climate change, digitalisation, and shifting mobility and travel patterns. By developing a set of open online courses, the project seeks to strengthen skills and competencies among students, professionals, and practitioners, enabling them to contribute to more sustainable and inclusive tourism and transport systems across Europe.
A key feature of the project is its participatory and design-thinking approach. Through ThinkLabs and communities of practice, stakeholders from academia, industry, and civil society are actively involved in co-creating the learning content. This ensures that the resulting MOOCs are not only academically grounded but also closely aligned with real-world needs and emerging professional practices.
The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) Mobilise research group plays a central role in the consortium. Mobilise coordinates the design and development of the MOOCs in general and develops two courses on mobility management and participatory foresight in tourism transport in particular, drawing on its expertise in innovative teaching methods, impact assessment, and stakeholder engagement. In addition, the group is actively involved in organising the Future Minds training schools that bring together students, educators, and practitioners to test and refine the educational content in an interactive learning environment.
The project is implemented in collaboration with partners from Greece, Italy, Sweden, and Cyprus, fostering strong European cooperation and knowledge exchange. Through these partnerships, Future Minds builds a shared framework for sustainable education in tourism and transport that reflects diverse regional contexts while maintaining common European goals.
By combining curriculum development, capacity building, and cross-sector collaboration, Future Minds aims to create long-lasting educational resources that support the transition towards more sustainable, resilient, and inclusive mobility and tourism systems in Europe.
