Mobilise developed a methodological approach to derive construction-related truck kilometres on city level, based on algorithmic and geospatial analyses of GPS data. Results show that large urban construction sites account for 26.40% of total HGV traffic in Brussels, equaling €45,631.85 of environmental damage costs per workday, or over €1mio per month. Particular attention is paid to local air pollution (NOx, PM) and global pollutants (GHG; CO2-eq.) which account for €55,123.07 and €80,409.95 per month of damage costs, respectively. Given the amplitude of the engendered environmental costs but often inevitable transport movements, governments should pay increasing attention to urban construction transport by stimulating CL setups or developing emission-free public procurement procedures. To this end, the results of this study can serve as baseline to tailor future policy recommendations. Want to know more ? Check out the article !
